Each season focuses on a new set of characters and a different year and plot, but retains similar themes and tropes that ultimately keep them connected.

It all starts in 2006 in Minnesota. Insurance salesman Lester Nygaard, drawn in self disappointment and endless humiliation from his colleagues and oppressive wife, meets shady guy Lorne Malvo, who persuades him to stop being a victim and take action in his own hands. This odd acquaintance gives Lester a chance to escape from his mundane life but with the cost of stepping on a criminal path. Soon a series of crimes committed by these two attracts the attention of deputy Molly Solverson and officer Gus Grimly, who begin to track them down.
